If you follow 3D printing news at all, it will not have escaped your notice that Microsoft is very interested in 3D printing technology. Over past few years they have therefore been slowly but certainly integrating 3D printing and scanning into the entirety of the windows product. Just a few months ago, during a preview of Windows 10, 3D design for the purpose of 3D printing was a big part of its presentation.
While we have since been expecting more on the Microsoft/3D printing front, we never expected this. For Microsoft has just released four free 3D printable files on Thingiverse a few days ago. All four designs are for making your own – hopefully fully functional – yoyos. You can find all four here. The four feature different basic designs, all of which are perfect for further customization, and can be 3D printed in a few pieces – typically two halves and a connecting piece. Just be warned: some 3D print with support, some without, so check the description before you print!
Unaware to most people, designing and manufacturing yoyos is actually an entirely separate and complex science. The expert yoyo-er will therefore probably be disgusted by the playing qualities of these toys, but it is nonetheless a very fun object to make (and even more fun to give to others). And expert yoyo-ers can obviously use these 3D designs as a base for further modeling and improvement. Perhaps an 3D printing can become an entirely new manufacturing avenue?
We’ve hardly ever seen 3D printed yoyos so far, so it’s a very interesting development to see a giant company release a couple of these files under its official label. Could this be a Windows preview of 3D printing things to come?

Microsoft has posted at least 216 items on the Thingiverse site since Oct 23, 2013.
