Medical 3D printed model firm Encoris has announced annual sales of almost $1m. Rather than catering for today’s Halloween festivities, the Michigan-based company specialises in clear skeletons for medical training purposes, and boasts Stryker Orthopaedics, Johnson and Johnson and Medtronic amongst its clients. The clear, custom skeletons, produced by Encoris using additive manufacturing techniques, are used both to educate surgeons and to demonstrate the function of clients’ implant devices for medical sales presentations.
Encoris' annual sales have risen to nearly $1m, with revenues expected to grow by 35 to 40 percent in 2016. The company expects to see profits rise as it moves into the European and teaching hospital and university market segments, where there is a constant demand for anatomical models.
The company makes unique presentation models for clients, which can range from an LED-lighted clear spine and vertebrae, to realistically moving bone and joint models. "Using urethane and specialized processes, we create feet and ankles, hands, wrists, shoulders and any other skeletal bone structures needed to demonstrate new implant products and surgical procedures for training surgeons and medical students," said Jim TenBrink, Encoris vice president of sales and marketing.
Steve Sevick, director of Biologics for the Virginia-based K2M Inc., has praised the usefulness of Encoris’ skeletal models for showing surgeons and patients how K2M devices work to correct spinal deformities. "Their movable, 3D models allow both the surgeon and patient to see exactly the spine's full disfigurement and how — step-by-step with K2M devices and grafts — the spine will be fixed and straightened.”
Encoris’ versatility and flexibility in serving clients like K2M has contributed to its rapid rise. "We don't manufacture 'one-size fits all' off-the-wall models," explained Operations Manager and co-founder Joel Zylstra.
Encoris’ range of skeletal models are each designed in West Michigan using CAD software, before being 3D printed and finally hand sculpted to create the master molds. The company, which has over 13 years of experience in the field, consists of a team of 17 employees. Its clear skeleton training models range from $365 for a clear bone model showing knee implants, to $7,100 for a highly complex surgical spine trainer.
The company says its mission is “[to improve] medical learning and retention through medical training models that move medicine from a ‘see one, do one, teach one’ method to a ‘see one, practice many, do one’ model for success.”
