For companies and makers eagerly awaiting the release of Nano Dimension’s PCB 3D printer, another step in its development has been completed as the Israeli electronics company has just announced they have finalized the development of the initial version of the “Switch” software package, which will be integrated into the DragonFly 2020 3D printer. Currently, the DragonFly 2020 3D printer itself is still under development.

The new software program was designed specifically for the preparation and 3D printing of electronic printed circuit boards, and was built to support traditional PCB formats such as Gerber files, VIA, and DRILL files. According to Nano Dimension, the Switch software offers users a comprehensive interface that both displays the PCB and detailed descriptions of its structure and allows for the PCB design to be converted into a 3D printable file format in a highly precise manner.

Additionally, the integrated software gives users the ability to easily edit the PCBs before being sent to the 3D printer, by simply adjusting a number of parameters including layer thickness, conductor width, layer order, punching and rotation, and even the shape of the PCB model. As the software is designed specifically for the capabilities of the DragonFly 2020, it also helps users to optimize their electronic designs for the printer as well as to maximize the printing surface’s usage.

In a recent press release, Amit Dror, CEO of Nano Dimension explained, "We are thrilled to announce the completion of the development of the initial version of our 3D printer software which presents a new dimension for creating and designing electronic circuits. In order to minimize production time, Nano Dimension strives to provide its customers a comprehensive solution to 3D print multilayer PCB prototypes: our novel 3D printer, advanced conductive and dielectric nano-inks, and now – an advanced software package for the management, editing and printing of electronics files. The software is designed to allow the engineer to create the production files for automat 3D printing, with no intermediate files. It's now easy to 'Switch' from Gerber to 3D files."

Nano Dimension’s DragonFly 2020 3D printer, which was announced last year, will be capable of 3D printing complex and fully functioning printed circuit boards using the company’s proprietary insulating and conductive nano-inks and advanced 3D inkjet deposition technology. While no specific date is set for the 3D printer’s release to market, Nano Dimension seems to be advancing its technologies quickly with a number of recently filed patents (for 3D printed shielded conductors in PCBs, and for the simultaneous curing and sintering of two types of ink). Additionally, the company was recently recognized as one of Gartner’s “Cool Vendors in 3D printing” of 2016, further reinforcing its potentials.
