Optomec, an Albuquerque-based electronics and metal 3D printing company, has made a series of announcements this morning that show how the company is expanding its business as well as its technologies. For starters, Optomec has announced that it will be showcasing its latest production grade metal 3D printing system at the International Manufacturing Technology Show from September 12th to 17th in Chicago. In addition to the exhibition show, Optomec has also announced a new agreement with machine-tool manufacturing company Fryer Machine Systems, through which the latter will integrate Optomec’s LENS metal additive manufacturing solution into its new LaserFab 3D hybrid machining centers.

Fryer Machine Systems’ hybrid VMCs (Vertical Machining Centers), which will include Optomec’s modular LENS Print Engine, itself designed for the rapid integration of other metal working platforms like CNC mills, lathes, welding, robots and more, are expected to retail for below $350,000—less than half the cost of other hybrid metal working machines on the market. With the affordable price tag, Fryer and Optomec are hoping to make their technologies and manufacturing systems more accessible.

The Lens Print Engine, which is part of Optomec’s LENS family of metal 3D printing systems, has been designed for modularity, with various integrated components in it such as Optomec’s proprietary SteadyFlow powder feeders, the LENS processing head with interchangeable nozzles, fiber laser, PartPrep, a 5-axis tool path generation software, and SmartAM closed loop process controls. The innovative system can be used to manufacture and repair high quality metal parts as well as to wear coatings in titanium, stainless steel, carbides, and super alloys.

Dave Ramahi, president and CEO of Optomec, said of the collaboration: “Both Fryer and Optomec share a common vision that the key to the industrial adoption is to follow this same principle by providing manufacturers with high quality, affordable metal additive manufacturing tools."

Fryer XP Series - High Speed Machining Centers

According to the companies, Fryer’s new LaserFab 3D hybrid machining centers can both print and finish metal machine parts up to a 4-micron tolerance, and feature both a high power fiber laser and a high-performance VMC for high speed machining. The new system also includes such features as a 1.5-second 24 tool ATC (Automatic Tool Changer), a 15,000 RPM inline spindle (30,000 RPM option), a high torque 30 HP motor and a 1,900 IPM rapid feed rate.

Both Optomec and Fryer Machine Systems will be present at the International Manufacturing Technology Show at McCormick Place in Chicago at North Hall booth #N73 and South Hall booth #S8719, respectively.
