Barcelona-based 3D printer company BCN3D will be launching its newest 3D printer today at Birmingham's TCT Show for additive manufacturing. The new machine, the BCN3D Sigmax, is a fused deposition modeling (FDM) 3D printer notable for its large print volume.
Priced at €4,470, the new 3D printer is quite a bit more expensive than the company’s other offerings (its recently released Sigma Release 2017 3D printer is listed on its website for €2,655). But if we look at the increase in build volume with the Sigmax machine, the bigger price begins to make sense.
Not only does the new 3D printer have a wide build volume of 420 x 297 x 210 mm, but it also features BCN3D’s Independent Dual Extruder (IDEX) system.
The dual extruders add versatility to the desktop 3D printer as users can benefit from printing duplicate prints at once, printing symmetrical parts (mirror mode), printing with soluble supports, or, of course, printing multi-material and multi-color parts.
The BCN3D Sigmax 3D printer can also be fitted with a wide range of different hot end nozzles, from 0.3 mm to 1 mm in diameter. Other specs include a layer height of 0.05 mm to 0.5 mm (depending on the nozzle size) and an X/Y/Z resolution of 12.5 µm, 12.5 µm, and 10 µm, respectively.
Users can print doubles using the Sigmax's Duplication Mode
Users can also choose the printer's Mirror Mode
In terms of materials, BCN3D says its new FDM printer is built for filaments with a diameter of 2.85 mm, and is compatible with PLA, ABS, PVA, Co-polyester, Nylon, TPU, HIPS, and “Specials.”
BCN3D itself was founded with open source principles and therefore keeps all its 3D printer designs and documents freely available. Similarly, all its 3D printers are built for use with Cura-BCN3D software, a customized version of the popular open source slicing program Cura.
Earlier this year, the Spanish company released the Sigma R17, a reengineered version of its original Sigma 3D printer. The main improvements the company made to the desktop system was the addition of a cooling system, which reduces operation noise, and the introduction of a new “Hotend family,” a range of products which are also compatible with the BCN3D Sigmax 3D printer.
As mentioned above, BCN3D’s new Sigmax 3D printer is being presented today at the Birmingham TCT show for additive manufacturing technologies. Expected to start shipping as of November 2, 2017, the new wide-format 3D printer is retailing for €4,470 and is currently available for order via the company’s website.
