PostNord, a communications and logistics company supplying the Nordic region, will make on-demand 3D printed models for users of Sony’s 3D Creator mobile app, which can be used to capture objects via smartphone 3D scanning.

General consumers often need a great deal of convincing before looking beyond Apple or Samsung for their next smartphone. For a buyer to choose one of the less ubiquitous brands, the smartphone would have to have some really special feature or other. 3D scanning technology, for example, as offered on various models of the Sony Xperia.
For those Sony Xperia smartphone users who have been happily 3D scanning object after object with Sony’s 3D creator app, there’s now another option for what they can do with those 3D models. In addition to 3D printing those models through Sculpteo, Sony Xperia users can now opt to have their files 3D printed via PostNord, a communications and logistics company headquartered in Sweden.

The aim of the partnership between Sony Mobile and PostNord is to make the 3D market more accessible for both consumers and businesses.

Sony’s 3D Creator app enables the fast and easy 3D scanning of 3D objects, and is the only smartphone 3D scanning app that requires just a single camera lens. It can be used to capture high-quality 3D scans of objects in just one minute, and its four scan modes include head scan, face scan, food scan, and freeform scan.
Sony Xperia smartphone users familiar with 3D Creator will now be able to send their creations to PostNord, which will print the 3D scans with the full-color Stratasys J750 3D printer.
“We are very excited about working with PostNord, that with its broad service portfolio, can handle the complete supply chain, from digital 3D file in the phone, to 3D printing and distribution to consumers,” says Lars Novak of Sony Mobile.
The companies have not specified whether the PostNord 3D printing feature will only be available to Sony customers in the Nordic region.
PostNord has also entered into partnership with 3YOURMIND, a leading supplier of production environments within the 3D industry, to offer an automated and fully customized production process.
