Ganit Goldstein, a fashion design graduate from the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design in Jerusalem, has collaborated with 3D printing manufacturer Stratasys to introduce a new series of unique 3D printed woven shoes. Goldstein’s “Between the Layers” graduation collection, which consists of seven 3D printed outfits and six pairs of shoes, were unveiled at the ‘Arts of Fashion Foundation’ 2018 Fashion show, which took place at the San Francisco Asian Art museum on 17th December 2018.
Goldstein’s inspiration for the “Between the Layers” collection derives from her experiences in Japan, where she learned a traditional weaving technique called "IKAT weaving" at the Tokyo University of the Arts. She began to develop a weaving process using an Orginal Prusa i3 Mk3 3D printer upon her return to Israel. After that, Goldstein has worked closely with Stratasys in the past years to create three sets of shoes using Stratasys Connex3 Color, Multi-material 3D printer. The combination of "IKAT weaving" and 3D printing has enabled truly intricate and customized designs.
“Stratasys’ advanced 3D printing technology has opened up endless possibilities for my designs, enabling me to print any design at the voxel level in vibrant colors and a range of materials – all in a single print,” said Goldstein. “This capability to control any voxel for any pattern has enabled me to design without boundaries and to combine 3D printing with traditional weaving techniques to create ultra-realistic shoes. For aspiring designers, the ability to fuse cutting-edge technology with traditional crafts is very exciting, unlocking the freedom to design without limitations of past years.”
“For me, the key to good design is to first get an understanding of the traditional design methods and foundations, and then explore how I can enhance the essence of the traditional method with new technology. Not only does 3D printing accelerate the design process and enable reduced production costs, it also affords designers total freedom of design,” explained Goldstein.
“We’re seeing a great deal of interest from the fashion industry regarding the immense opportunities for customization that 3D printing is offering up," Commented Naomi Kaempfer, Creative Director of Art, Design and Fashion at Stratasys. "We urge designers to enjoy and take advantage of the possibilities afforded by the technology to create avant-garde, personalized designs quickly, cost-effectively and without traditional design boundaries.”
The first set of 3D printed woven shoes can also be seen at the International Trade Fair for the Skilled Trades, taking place in Munich, Germany from the 13th to 17th March 2019, as part of the international competition ‘TALENTE’ 2019.
