In 2004, Deborah lost her lower leg in a motorcycle accident, her life was changed since that moment. She was fitted with a standard prosthetic limb for regaining her life back as before. In 2011 Deborah got a custom "Fairing" made. What is a Fairing? Fairing is a specialized covering that surround an existing prosthetic leg, accurately recreating the body form. When Deborah wears it, people began to comment on the leg, calling it "cool" and "sexy". That words you don't usual hear for prosthetic limbs.

Bespoke Innovations is a company that creates Fairings for amputees based not only on their physical needs, but also their tastes and personalities. Deborah can select from several Fairings to match her mood or occasions. Her Fairings include a set in black lace and chrome, one appearing as white lace, another wrapped with tattooed leather. She can now wear skirts as every other girl does.

Bespoke use lightweight and durable polymer materials to design Fairings. The More remarkable is how they’re made: through advances in 3D printing technology.

Scan. They use 3D scanner to capture images of both the "sound" leg and the prosthetic leg, then uses the mirror image to create a part in the exact shape of the one that was lost. This way, the wearer is given their body symmetry back. Most of the scanning takes place at Bespoke Innovations office in San Francisco.

Design. The user may select from database of form templates, patterns, tattoos, materials, metal plating, graphics - whatever they like.

3D Print. Then Bespoke takes the information of user and uses 3D printing to create a one-of-a-kind fairing that is exactly what the customer wants.

Watch the video of how physical parts are created from digital models.

A standard Fairing weighs about 6.6 ounces (about the weight of an iPhone). Leather and metal could add a little more. They are very light to wear. There’s two types of fairing, a straight up material for around $4,000 and for fashion, metal plates with leather wrap and extra details for around $6,000.

Every year U.S. hospitals perform more than 130,000 amputation procedures. Amputees want also to be active in life, to sport, ride motorcycles, to be the same as the other. Bespoke takes advantage of the ongoing innovations and dropping costs in 3D printing to help amputees regain their mobility while showing off their personal style.

Bespoke plays a part of a movement towards huge growth in customization of medical products. 3D printing is large and widespread in the medical field. There are 10,000,000 3D printed hearing aids in circulation worldwide. 3D printed hearing aids is dominant in the hearing aids market because it is cheap and more comfortable. These application of 3D printing is making tragic life-changing event much less traumatic.
