Tyler McNaney from Milton, VT is a student at Vermont Technical College studying Mechanical Engineering. He has launched a Kickstarter campaign for his technology project Filabot. What is Filabot? It is a plastic filament maker that will grind up recyclable plastics and melt the plastic pieces. The filament will be extruded and rolled onto a spool for your 3D printer.
The video below is the test from the Filabot prototype, the filament was made from a yellow HDPE detergent bottle and a HDPE milk Jug.
Filabot is still a work in progress. But the project has gained positive feedback and most importantly the funding goal of $10,000 has been reached. There is still 15 days to go for backing up the Filabot project - to support the further development of these extruders. The plastics used in his project are PET, PE-HD, PE-LD, PP, but I guess for most DIY 3D printer owners the most interesting outcome would be HDPE and ABS filament.
