What are beauty and ugliness? Our societies have predetermined judgements. Artist Fred Laforge questioned this standard by showing in his work the bodies that are old, voluptuous, flabby and bald. Is a fat body an ugly body? He reveals the beauty of the human body by presenting the human form in robot-like pixelated portraits. His sculptures look like the objects printed out directly from a computer program showing only the basic visual elements. But each of his sculpture displays its own character and converts these "flawed" bodies into elegant art.
Laforge's work is inspired by the formal aesthetics of classical art such as Greek sculptures. His sculptures of the atypical bodies are in opposition to this "standard" beauty. His work reflects primarily in a formal nature, and the various bodies are included for their visual qualities.
From Thursday January 26 to Saturday March 10, 2012 Fred Laforge's work is displayed at Lalerie [sas], Montréal (Québec) Canada, titled: ????????????, which is Russian meaning "Disappearance".
