With access to the 3D Printer in the school, Matt Bunting of the University of Arizona created a spider-like hexapod robot that makes use of artificial intelligence to learn how to move.

Using 21 motors, a web camera, and a tiny PC for the basis of its body, this skateboard-sized robot is fast moving and fully aware of its surroundings.

After Matt Bunting uploaded his robot video online, he was contacted by Intel to build two hexapod robots to promote its Atom processor. With the aid of Intel, he perfected the hexapod and created robots capable of vision, learning and adapting to the situation they are placed in.

This awesome spider robot has been constructed from 3D-printed parts printed on a Dimensions BST 1200es 3D printer from Stratasys. Using traditional CNC tools and technology to make these complicated parts would have been too expensive and near impossible for such a project. Watch the video below that Matt Bunting describes how the Fused Deposition Modeling technology works and how he makes the hexapod robots.

"I took advantage of the 3D printer," Bunting says in the recent "Daily Planet" program from Discovery Channel. "I was able to conceive a part in my head and then design it, and have it the same day — which is incredible."
