Every year, Disney World hosts 'Star Wars' weekend for one month long for millions of 'Star Wars' fans. This year, starting May 18, 2012, visitors to the Star Wars Weekends will have a chance to try the coolest use for 3D printing technology ever: the "Carbon Freeze-Me." and relive the famous carbon freezing scene from The Empire Strikes Back.
Visitors to the Star Wars Weekends at Disney's Hollywood Studios can step into a "carbon freezing chamber," where a 3D scan of the visitor's face is taken by multiple cameras. The 3D scan is estimated to be about 30 minutes and it will be used to create an 8-inch figurine of a 3D scan of the visitor's face and the body of Han Solo. And in about four weeks, the figure will be 3D printed and shipped to the visitor.
Each carbonite figurine costs $99.95 (plus shipping). A light-up wristband is also included in the package, and every additional replica you order costs $74.95 each.
The 2012 Star Wars Weekends are every Friday, Saturday and Sunday from May 18 to June 10, 2012. Note that you still need to pay a full park admission ticket. From this week Disney has begun accepting reservations.
