Ben Cowell had never coded in C# or WPF, nor any engineering or electrical experience before he started building a robotic 3D light painting system. He got the idea from his early NXT experiment and robotics. After several months of learning and hard work he did find a way to turn his lego project into a light painting robot.

An animation is exported from Autodesk 3DS Max and imported into the Lightplot software. The software controls both the camera and the robotic arm to draw each frame with an LED in 3D space. The software also controls a DSLR camera to take long exposure photographs of each frame of animation.

Ben has put together a comprehensive details showing how the project has been developed from idea to concrete project. You can read more about the process on Ben's blog.
