MakerBot Industries began in 2009 when three friends founded this 3D-printing startup in Brooklyn. Now the company employs 115 people after receiving $10 million funding and has been delivering three generations of its hobbyist 3D printer.

The company has just announced the delivery time for MakerBot Replicator, the company's newest product, is now only 30 days.

Makerbot blog post says:

You can now expect a significantly lower wait time when you order the Replicator.

That’s right, while we used to quote twelve weeks, we can now get The Replicator to you in 30 days or less. You’ll notice the change on our store page, too. But wait, there’s more. Even though we are quoting a 30-day lead time, we are shipping sooner than that in many cases. In fact, last Thursday, for the first time in company history, we took an order and shipped a MakerBot in the same day.

This is probably the most effective way for businesses to reduce stock. Short lead time is becoming an important area of competitive differentiation among 3D printer suppliers. It can bring the Replicator to market more quickly and enables Makerbot to be more competitive. Reducing lead-time can bring many benefits such as improving customer satisfaction, improving on-time delivery, reducing cost and increasing inventory turns. It also means Makerbot has been improving its performance through an effective supply chain management.

The Replicator is sold at $1,749 for a single extruder model and $1999 for the dual extruder. Makerbot has got almost 10,000 printers out in the world and it has established itself as a major brand among 3D printing enthusiasts.

...how is a 30 day lead time considered a "short lead time"?
