This week i.materialse brought you a new material, high detailed stainless steel (HS). This material could deliver a significant level of detail and strength to your design. "It's pretty much as strong as titanium, but more shiny and mostly less expensive. Towards silver it's less shiny but stronger. ""The dimensional accuracy of the material however is not as awesome as you can expect from Titanium."

This material is suitable for small, detailed, strong, and weather proof models where accuracy is not yet the initial concern, such as boardgame figures, miniatures, keychains, jewelry, bolts.
The technology Digital Steel prints your model by running stainless steel powder (316L) through a precision inkt jet printer; the object is then depowdered and sintered in an oven at around 1300 degrees. After cooling down the object is mechanically polished before being sent to customer.
i.materialise team member Wim even did a test: he put 3D printed stainless steel (HD) objects in a bath with salt for one month but no any hint of rust.

The company is asking customers to try, play and test the material before they include it in their materials page.
i.materialise provides an indication of cost for this trial period, for example:
- A model of 10 x 10 x 10 mm will cost you 18,2€ (excl. VAT)
- A ring of 23 x 23 x 5 mm will cost you 35,31€ (excl. VAT)
- The Aislin figure below of 15 x 15 x 35 mm will cost you 89,7€ (excl. VAT)
But be sure your model doesn't exceed 40 x 40 x 35 mm and need to be at least 3 x 3 x 3 mm. Details go from 0.3 mm and wall thickness goes from 1.0 mm. Read the design guide here.
