Slic3r, the G-code generator for 3D printers, is developed by Alessandro Ranellucci (aka. Sound) in Italy. The software converts a digital 3D model into printing instructions for your 3D printer.
The project was started in 2011 from scratch. It is bundled with the most important host software packages: Pronterface, Repetier-Host, ReplicatorG. and is a very easy tool to use for getting great looking prints. It cuts the model into horizontal slices (layers), generates toolpaths to fill them and calculates the amount of material to be extruded. Alessandro updated the software very quickly so there are many people enjoying using it and the project gets help from contributors and community all over the world.
In this video below, Alessandro talked about his goals in the programming, the support he got from community and companies, his European sourced 3D printers and filament, and the future of 3D printing software.
