Dec.11, 2012
The weather has turned chilly, and the calendar on your desk is getting thinner. The end of another year is upon us and that the holiday season has arrived in full force. This is the time of year that we start to prepare special gatherings with family and friends. What kind of decor shall we have for our Christmas tree? These 3D printed snowflakes will for sure add variety and one-of-a-kind decor to your home.
In 2010 Matters of Grey shared a fun project: hand cut paper snowflake designs with a Star Wars twist. Inspired by these 19 designs, Thingiverse user IHeartRobotics optimized the design and printed one of them in ABS plastics. This is Stormtrooper flake:
Later, Thingiverse user Nachimir added a Darth Vader snowflake to go with the Stormtrooper flake. Both designs are available on Thingiverse for download. Thanks Nachimir and IHeartRobotics.
For this winter, Makerbot also made four snowflakes and shared CAD files on Thingiverse. Snowflake 1, Snowflake 2, Snowflake 3, Snowflake 4.
pmoews' 3D printed Koch Snowflakes are another cool Christmas tree ornament.
These Koch snowflakes are created by successively extending the sides of a triangle. The Koch method and a fortran program that was used for calculation are described here.
The Koch snowflakes .stl files can be found on Thingiverse.
No 3D printer at home? No problem, Kimotion Arts on Shapeways designed and 3D printed a series of beautiful snowflakes that you can order online. "No two snowflakes are the same." Find them all there.
Have fun and have a great holiday season!
