What materials can be 3D printed? There are lots of materials available for home 3D printing use. For helping you understand the range of materials available, Jeremie Francois made a survey of usable materials at home and put together a review of these materials and their properties. ABS is short for acrylonitrile butadiene styrene. It is rigid and durable for household items, Lego bricks and even acid containers and its property varies with temperature. ABS curls a lot when it cools down, so a heated bed is needed for keeping the first layer warm while printing. Regular PLA usually print very nicely and finely when extruded at around 220°. On the other side PLA stays flat and sticks better than other plastics to the printer bed when it cools down.
Besides the commonly used plant-based PLA and oil-based ABS filament in personal 3D printers, Jeremie has also gone through other thermopastics such as nylon, polycarbonate and wood-based filament. In addition, he made a brief introduction of printing a mold and casting metallic objects using lost wax casting.
