3D Systems (NYSE:DDD) announced today a brand new, one-of-a-kind 3D printed guitar, the Americana, embedding the rich details of New York City's most memorable landmarks including, the Empire State Building, Chrysler Building, Freedom Tower, Statue of Liberty, Staten Island Ferry, Brooklyn Bridge, Yankee Stadium, St Patricks Cathedral etc. The body of the electric guitar is covered with stars and stripes.

Americana is designed by renowned artist Olaf Diegel, who has designed the famous 3D printed Scrab and Spider electric guitars in 2012. Straying from his signature biomimicry-styled 3D printed guitars, Olaf Diegel was inspired by his love for New York City and all that it represents when creating the Americana. The bodies are printed on an sPro 230 SLS system by 3D Systems using Selective Laser Sintering technology. It demonstrates the complexity and sophistication that is possible with 3D printing.

In an interview Olaf Diegel described his passion for 3D printing:

3D printing is the only technology that allows me to create exactly what I envisioned. It used to be the case that I would imagine a fantastic product or design, and would then have to substantially compromise and adjust my idea until the design was manufacturable. With 3D printing I don't have that restriction; if it's in my imagination, I can put it in my hands. It also removes a lot of the risk associated with bringing a product to market. For example, if I wanted to bring my guitars to market using conventional technologies, I would be looking at several hundred thousand dollars in tooling for each guitar design. With that kind of an obstacle, they simply wouldn't make it to market. 3D printing involves no tooling or setup costs, and allows me to get my products anywhere in the world.

The Americana will be on display to the public for the first time at the National Association of Music Merchants Show, NAMM, in Anaheim, CA, January 24-27, 2013, at the Anaheim Convention Center, in Hall E, booth 1537.

The Americana is also available for purchase today. The price is US$4,000. Interested musicians and enthusiasts are invited to work directly with Olaf to customize their preferences including a range of pick-ups and necks to choose from.

Very nice. But this will sound shit because of no solid wood body which makes the body of the sound, the side frequencies. Good solid wood body (mahagony or alder or basswood) is very important for rock guitars.

While these guitar bodies designs are very interesting, this is obviously just touching the surface of what is possible here. Keep going!
