Inspired by the GNU RepRap 3D printer and Arthur Sacek's Milling Machine, 15-year-old high school student from Greece, Marios Papachristou, has started building a special 3D printer made of LEGO Mindstorms(R) pieces. This project aims to motivate people in the fields of art, computers & design and to contribute in informing users about new technologies.

The machine ressembles the design of RepRap Mendel 3D printer. Three motors are being used to control the machine, plus a DC motor to control the drill attached on the Z axis. Then a DIY linear actuator was added, a simple 8-tooth Gear was put between a Worm and a Linear (rack) Gear to establish linear movement along the Z-axis.

Here are some photos of the Lego-based 3D printer:

More photos can be found on project's google plus page. Marios Papachristou has established a collaboration with the P2P Lab to create a wiki page to document the on progress project. Follow the project here.
