Once you get a new 3D printer, one of the first questions is, where to start? You can of course download designs from Thingiverse, but if you want to make something unique, the best way is to make it yourself. Here are some free apps you can start with for making your first creations.

Cookie Caster

Build your own cookie cutter in this web-based app in under a minute. You can draw your cookie cutter freehand, or upload an image and trace around it to get your shape. Once you're finished, you can save the file to the Cookie Caster gallery or download the .stl for free.

Cubify Love Notes

With Love Notes, you can create a free stl file, send it to your friend and love. You can make a special gift for Valentine's Day!

Cubify Pics

Cubify Pics is an easy tool that allows users to upload a photo, pick a custom frame, apply cool stamping and stencilling effects and 3D print it on a 3D printer at home. 3D printed photos can be backlit to form a night light cover or equipped with a loop to make great, custom ornamental gifts. It provides free .STL file for use with Cubify cloud printing service and any other 3D printers.

4 Cubify jewelry apps: Cubify Rings, Bracelets, Earrings and Tags

With these fun and playful apps you can design your own jewelry and then 3D print them. These apps are designed to be stylish, chunky and colorful so kids and adults alike can enjoy customizing and accessorizing. Autodesk 123D

Autodesk 123D software is part of company's suite of 3D graphics software. It includes a library of base shapes that users can manipulate to create 3D printable designs. Autodesk 123D allows users to create a digital model and then 3D print or fabricate their idea whether on the iPad, Mac, PC or via their Web browser. They have launched a number of consumer apps such as 123D Design, 123D Catch, and 123D Sculpt.

123D Catch — Automatically convert ordinary photos into extraordinary 3D models leveraging the power of the cloud.

TinkerCad

With Tinkercad you can quickly turn your idea into a CAD model for a 3D printer. TinkerCad is a 3D design editing program to run in your browser and it has an easy to use interface. You selecting what shape you want and drag it anywhere in space, you can then add other patterns until you get what you want. With this web app you can create complex 3D shapes by combining basic ones. When you finish you can download the file yourself if you have access to your own 3D printer.
