MakieLab, a London-based company making internet-connected customisable, announces today that its first product, Makies, has successfully met European toy safety standards to become the world's first 3D printed toy to display the CE mark.
Formed in 2011, MakieLab has created technology to create physical toys from digital game objects, starting with avatars. In Jun 2012 Makielab raised $1.4 million seed round investment, led by early-stage investors Nordic VC funds Lifeline Ventures (Thinglink, Ditto) and Sunstone (Gidsy, Podio).
Makielab's first product, Makies, poseable 10" action dolls, are manufactured on-demand in nylon and assembled by hand in MakieLab's London workshop. As the first ever customizable 3D printed doll, Makies are now also certified as compliant with EU toy safety regulations, and approved for use by kids aged 3 and up.
The early version of Makies were all white due to limitations of materials. After many experiment, in January the company annouced that customer can now order hand dip-dyed Makies with four different colors: Ice Frosting, Strawberry Milk, Cocoa Bean and Pale Pistachio. Future products include a full mobile game, further expansion of Makies toys, customisation options, and accessories.
MakieLab's second toy-game product, targeted at the boys 8+ market, is currently in development with partners.
