Art and film director Masashi Kawamura is cofounder and a creative director at Creative Lab 'PARTY' in Tokyo & New York. He creatd and ran the Omote 3D Shashin Kan ("Shashin Kan" is translated "photo booth") project last year and was included in Fast Company's ranking of the '100 Most Creative People in Business'.

Using 3D scanning and 3D printing technology visitors could get a full body scan at the Omote 3D photo booth in Tokyo and take home a 3D printed miniature figurines of themselves.

In the video below Kawamura speaks about the pop-up 3D photo booth and shares his thoughts about 3D printing.

When 3D printers and 3D scanners are becoming more accessible, Kawamura and his team found it was a new way to innovate the form of the family portrait. "What happens is, when you come, we take a full 3D scan using our portable scanners. People could actually bring back home their miniature figurines, instead of a 2D portrait that you normally get in photo stores."

The greatest challenge Kawamura faced in the process were to find the right 3D scanner to use, how to adjust the 3D data to prepare it for 3D printing and how to efficiently combine different tools and make a perfect final product.

But Kawamura is really exciting about 3D printing."3D printing for me is a very exciting medium to play around with, but I think it's still in a very early phase of development. After doing this project we've learnt a lot of technical difficulties and a lot of things that could be done better in terms of technologies and also the materials that we use."

Kawamura believes 3D printing will get better in the next year or two. "Just the idea that anyone could manufacture their own product is very, very interesting." he says.

It's an Artec MHT handheld 3d scanner and cost $30,000. The printer is likely a Zcorp 650 full color 3d printer.
