Nendoroid, a serie of 10 cm (4 in) plastic figures created by Japanese Good Smile Company, was first released in 2006. Nendoroid figures are usually replicas of an anime or manga character like Sword Art Online, Squid Girl, Kannagi, Lucky Star, as well as characters from the synthesizer software Vocaloid along with games such as Touhou Project.
Nendoroid are often made in a chibi or super deformed style, with a large head and smaller body to make them look cute.
During the recent Nico Nico Chokaigi event in Japan, many Nendoroid figures were demonstrated and revealed. One of them is Kyojin (Giant) from the Japanese manga series Attack on Titan, which you would probably agree that it is not really that 'cute'.
Good Smile Company broadcast live for two days demonstrating the degital fabrication process of the new Nendoroid figure.
The 3D model was first created using 3D modeling software and then sent to a full color 3D printer. Two heads were printed simutanously in case one is failed. When the printing was finished, the figured was dried, cleaned and sealed in a bath of instant glue.
The whole 3D printing process was revealed at the event. Here are some photoes posted by a Good Smile Company employee on Twitter from the event.
