Conceptual artist Florentijn Hofman's giant rubber duck floated into HK on May.2, 2013 and captured the city's attention. Rubber Duck will float outside Ocean Terminal until June 9.

In collaboration with 3D Systems, manufacturer of rapid prototyping machines, Hong Kong's largest toy store chain Toys "R" Us held a "BYE BYE Duck Party" at its Tsim Sha Tsui branch shop, demonstrating 3D printing and 3D printed consumer products.

On site mini duck, with size of 6cm x 5cm x 5cm, were printed on 3D Systems' Cube 3D printers. Each 3D printed duck was sold for HK$488, with a "dim sum steamer", a nameplate and birth certificate.

Suzhou University, Ping Fu’s alma mater, has fulfilled its promise to release the documentation that they showed to media during their June press conference: 1. On the newly released Student Registration form at Suzhou University for incoming new students, Ping Fu herself filled out that a. she joined Chinese Communist Youth League in April, 1973; b. she served as a class monitor of her high school class at Nanjing Guanghuamen High School; c. she graduated from Nanjing Guanghuamen High School in 1976; 2. The undergraduate program of Chinese Language and Literature was Ping Fu’s first choice for college; 3. She received an Excellence mark for her first year of English class and 88 for her second year of English class; The evidence released by Suzhou University, Ping Fu’s alma mater, refutes entirely her tale of dark childhood told in Bend, Not Break. Soochow University Statement (with document served as evidence) 7/21/2013 http://eng.suda.edu.cn/article/20130721114559586.shtml An Open Letter to Ms. Ping Fu by Soochow University 7/21/2013 http://eng.suda.edu.cn/article/20130721114559587.shtml

Here is the latest development of this controversy over Ping Fu's memoir. South China Morning Post has just published an article: 'Heartbroken' author Ping Fu willing to apologise for inaccuracies in memoir' http://www.scmp.com/news/china/article/1272932/heartbroken-author-ping-fu-willing-apologise-inaccuracies-memoir Ping Fu still need to come clean with other lies in the book. BTW, Suzhou University showed the school records that she joined the Communist Youth League in 1973, which means she was definitely not "black" as she claims in her book but "red" enough to be just one step away from being a Chinese Communist Party member! This reminds me of the recent news that that Giovanni Palatucci, 'Italian Schindler' hailed as Holocaust hero, turned out to be Nazi collaborator. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/06/21/giovanni-palatucci-holocaust-nazi_n_3475023.html Fake memoirs are nothing new, and Ping Fu is not the first one, nor will be the last one among those who turn out to be exactly the opposite of who they claim to be.

Is she trying to open an office in Hongkong? Earlier this year, she made the US president believe that "A company called Geomagic, a software maker, decided to close down its overseas centers in China and Europe and move their R&D here to the United States." (http://www.whitehouse.gov/the-press-office/2011/02/07/remarks-president-chamber-commerce) She is having her face off so soon? Or she regards changing the name from Geomagic to become part of 3D System is equal to closing down her company!

Suzhou University where she got undergraduate training, officially clarified that Ping Fu is a shameless liar. Please see official statements: http://www.suda.edu.cn/html/article/17/31716.shtml (Chinese version) http://eng.suda.edu.cn/article/20130612114559585.shtml (English version) Can you believe a company who hires a liar like her as its CSO?

From this letter, it's clearly stated that she did not obtain a bachelor's degree from Suzhou University. This means she faked this degree when she applied for UIUC in 1988.

Ping Fu accompanied her then-husband to Hongkong in 1994-1995, not 1993-1994. He served as visiting professor at Computer Science department, HKUST. She had no official assignment. http://www.cs.duke.edu/~edels/ She gave birth to their daughter in US in 1993, impossible to do anything in Hongkong then. Other than writing her memoir in Chinese, what she did in Hongkong was just to install Mosaic, which by then had been done thousands of times by students all over the world. It's not difficult, and too late to contribute to construction of the Supernet.

It is learned that Suzhou University is planning to do the following regarding Ping Fu's fabrication in her memoir: 1. The Chinese statement just released will be published soon on its English website. Relevant evidences needed may be withheld for the time being as they involve Ping Fu's personal records. If necessary, names of relevant witnesses and material evidences may be published at any time. Ms.Fu's then adviser at Soochow University (Suzhou University) may be interviewed directly. Both Chinese and foreign news media are welcome to Soochow University for conducting interviews with Ms. Fu's teachers, classmates, and relevant personnel. 2. It is hoped that Ms. Fu will come out to respond openly. Failure to respond on her part will be equivalent to admitting that she has lied. 3. Soochow University is willing to confront Ms. Fu openly, provided that there is participation of relevant media. However, if the confrontation is to be conducted in America, it is hoped that the U.S. authorities will provide convenience with regard to issuing visas to relevant personnel. 4. It is learned that Soochow University is in the process of having an attorney to draft an open letter, which will be published in U.S. newspapers and websites, demanding an open apology from Ms. Fu. If Ms. Fu fails to make an apology, Soochow University shall reserve the right to file a lawsuit against Ms. Fu. both in China and America.

I was at HKUST when Ping Fu and her husband Herbert Edelsbrunner worked there from 1993 to 1994. Ping helped and consulted a group of us who started Hong Kong Supernet. Professor Shen was the founding head of the Computer Science Department and served in that position until 1995. He also served as Director of HKUST's Sino Software Research Center from 1992 to 1995, during which time he co-founded Hong Kong Supernet Limited, the first licensed commercial Internet service provider in Hong Kong. Supernet was the largest service provider in Hong Kong when it was sold in 1996 and became Pacific Internet.

Ping Fu claims she helped create the Internet https://vimeo.com/61312752 Does anyone believe that? On Bloomberg Business Week's website http://investing.businessweek.com/research/stocks/private/person.asp?personId=949571&privcapId=33595, Ping Fu has two advanced degrees from Suzhou Univ. and Nanjing Univ. respectively. Could Ms. Fu explain how you got these two degrees? You said you never graduated from Suzhou University, and how could you manage to get a Master's degree from it?

"I did it because I want more people expose to his wonder art and generosity (Asher put his work out free mostly)." Ping Fu, that's a lame excuse for infringing other people's copyright. You published and profited from your translation of a children's book by Mary Parsley in China. Could you tell us whether you had obtained the permission to do so from the original American author?

Y.Chen wrote at 6/10/2013 5:39:58 PM:

Why would someone spend HK$488 for a 3D printed rubber duck when you can buy an ordinary rubber duck for much less? 3D printing is good for prototyping, not for daily consumables. When Ping Fu goes on saying it can be used to print cookies, chocolate, meat on her promotional video shows, I think she is misleading the general public.

The ducks and the baskets are printed on 3D Systems Projet x60 printers, the basket has a slot for custom name plate. The name plates are printed on Cube in store. There are other children friendly items designed by Ideo designers were printed on Cube in store. There is an education booth and desk where children and parents can touch and play with the Cubes and learn more about 3D printing. 3D Systems is committed to education, and we believe that our schools systems needs to educate both thinkers and makers. 3D Systems donated the Cubes at my request and I personally attended this wonderful event. I put a pink Dizigof's braided torus in the center to show math art to children, upon his complain, I promptly took down the model and credited him online in social media. This incidence has nothing to do with 3D system explore an artist, in contrary, I did it because I want more people expose to his wonder art and generosity (Asher put his work out free mostly). I hope we can clear this mis-understanding, and regain mutual respect and love of art and science.

Ping Fu wrote at 6/9/2013 11:16:26 AM:

The pink braided torus in the center case is designed by artist Asher Nahmaias (or @dizingof).

The ducks were printed on a Zcorp machine not a cube. The containers look as they were printed on cubes, but some look as Zcorp prints too. 3d systems motto should be bait and switch. Seen it multiple times now.
