Georgia-based Berry College's business school and 7Hills Makerspace are partnering to sponsor "Christmas in July: 3D Printer Basics for Parents," a seminar that will familiarize local moms and dads with the hardware and software options related to 3D printing.

Parents will have two opportunities to attend the free workshop, which will be held on July 25 and again on July 26, 7-9 p.m. both nights at 7Hills Makerspace on Broad Street in Rome, Georgia.

At the workshop, parents will get an introduction to the 3D printing process, the different 3-D printer models, CAD modeling software, and include a hands-on demonstration of the printer.

John Grout, a founding member of 7Hills Makerspace and Dean of the Berry College Campbell School of Business, said the idea was inspired by Chris Anderson, author of "Makers: The New Industrial Revolution." Anderson recommended that today's parents buy a household 3-D printer, just as their parents brought home the first personal computers.

Grout takes this recommendation to heart. "The Apple IIe could not do industrial-scale computing, but the experience using the device was an important learning opportunity to prepare for the future. Today's 3D printers aren't capable of industrial-scale manufacturing either, but they teach kids early on that they can invent and make just about anything. And maybe they will," Grout said.

Each session is limited to 20 participants. To reserve a space at the workshop, email Grout at jgrout@berry.edu.

Do you know of a company or individual that can produce a prototype of a small part for us?
