3D printer manufacturer MakerBot announced in March the development of a new MakerBot Digitizer Desktop 3D Scanner prototype at South by Southwest (SXSW) Interactive.

MakerBot anticipates that the Digitizer will be used mostly by those who have dreamed of being able to scan a physical object and then print it in 3D. Here is a good news: Makerbot announced today that the Makerbot Digitizer is going on sale next week. "It is the easiest, fastest way for anyone to create 3D models," says Makerbot in an announcement. "We optimized the whole process to work perfectly with MakerBot's Replicator Desktop 3D printers."

Makerbot included a list of features of the Digitizer:

  • Simple, yet sophisticated software creates clean, watertight 3D models with just two clicks.
  • Get a 3D digital design file in just minutes.
  • No design skills, 3D modeling or CAD expertise required to get started.
  • Outputs standard 3D design file formats that can be modified and improved in third-party 3D modeling programs, like Autodesk's free software MeshMixer.
  • Easily upload your unique scans directly to Thingiverse.com.

Makerbot did not disclose the price. "Full speed ahead." says Makerbot. Here is a preview photo of the device (seen below), it has a pretty neat design.

Thanks to Robin for the tip!

The Matterform (formerly Photon) will probably list for $600. I don't see how this is going to be under $300. I guess the software doesn't have any value either. Also, I don't think it's just a repackaged Fabscan. It may have started from something like it.

There's no way it's going to be less than $300. Might as well buy a 3D scanner already built into a 3D printing machine like AIO Robotics: http://aiorobotics.com/

This is nothing more than a Fabscan in a plastic package. If this is more than $300, it will be priced way too high. I would like to see their software though.
