What you see in the photo above is Opus, a passive amplifier & stand for Apple products. Created by Chicago based Sanjeet Das, a designer at Innovation Factory, the two halves of Opus hold devices firmly in place at an ideal viewing angle, turning the meager sound from an iPad, iPhone, or iPod into a room filling resonance. For portability, the two halves use magnets to snap and stay together.
"I was frustrated with my iPad case; it didn't function properly as a stand. I wanted to create something I wouldn't have to attach to my iPad at all times & wanted to preserve the smooth look & feel of the iPad. After research into similar products, I found an interesting concept for amplifying sound from the iPads internal speaker. This is where I found white space & started to develop the concept for Opus. There wasn't a product out there that combined both a stand and a sound amplifier. We started brainstorming and quickly moved onto prototypes! We've been testing and redesigning Opus for a long time. We've been using 3D printing to create iteration after iteration to test the acoustics fit and form." says Sanjeet Das.
Speakers on Apple products often project sound down or to the back. What sets apart the Opus from other stands for iOS and Android-based devices is its unique design: There are two halves to Opus: the left side is an acoustic loudspeaker that catches, redirects, enhances & amplifies sound, and the right side firmly holds your device in place. In addition Opus' compact size makes it easy to bring along nearly anywhere.
Opus works best with the iPad (2nd, 3rd, & 4th generation) & will also work with the iPhone 5, iPhone 4/4S, & iPod Touch (3rd, 4th, & 5th generation), as well as the Galaxy S3 & S4.
According to Sanjeet Das, their entire prototyping process was done using a Makerbot Replicator 2 and UP!. But Opus is designed to be created using injection molding for mass production. The Opus is available in smooth or rubberized plastic, customers can choose color from Black, Cherry, Graphite, Mint, Navy & White.
