The Verge's new series "Small Empires" is a weekly show that focuses on rising New York City startups. In their fifth Episode hosted by Alexis Ohanian, co-founder of Reddit, the crew took a tour of the Shapeways' HQ and factory in Long Island City, NY.

Watch the well-produced and inspiring 25 minute video below that Alexis Ohanian talks to Shapeways staff and CEO Peter Weijmarshausen, as well as Shapeways artist / cufflinks aficionado Peter Knocke, whose work is made via Shapeways.

A company within a company." That's the story of Shapeways, a startup that began in an incubator within Dutch conglomerate, Philips. And Shapeways itself is something of an incubator — a 3D-printing marketplace that allows for others to make a business out of their work.

Inspiring. The only thing that is holding me back from purchasing things on shapeways is that the items are so tiny, and the cost seems big - for what you are ordering. I know that time will reduce the cost. So its a waiting game...
