Alessandro Grossi, a creative mechanical engineer based in Italy, designed and developed DIMBODY 3d scanner, a digitalizer tha allows you to make a digital copy of physical objects on your computer.
"DIMBODY is based of triangulation between laser plane and a CMOS monochromatic sensor, it acquires point coordinates of an object (point cloud). The point cloud is then transformed in a 3d surface by the software and saved as a STL file. Then you can print it in your 3d printer, or scale, transform, modify it in a CAD software." explains Grossi.
DIMBODY 3d scanner is still under devleopment. Currently the team is looking for funding on indiegogo for finishing development, buying new tooling and moulds. The price of the DIMBODY 3d scanner is set to 899€ (1,198$) and it will be delivered around February 2014.

Problem is, one can have this for peanuts. Proof for this is david 3d. One webcam + a 5$ laserline, turntable is also a cheapo. What we are paying for? For them to have a huge profit??? Thanks ill pass.

The moving scanning head to supplement the turntable could be beneficial, but it's a lot of money for a machine to back sight unseen.
