The upcoming customizable, assembled-in-the-USA Moto X will be "the first smartphone that you can design yourself." For showing its love to makers, Motorola commissioned in July a 'Make-with-Moto' truck filled with hackable phones, 3D printers, laser cutters, scanning systems and soldering stations, etc and started driving around the country visiting schools.
A side project during this trip is called MAKEwithX. The truck crew have designed a set of delightful co-creation experiences for Moto X owners to create personal, one-of-a-kind accessories for their Moto X smartphones using group's 3D printers.
The truck crew is able to craft unique accessories such as NFC-enabled topographic dog tags and tessellation bracelets, backplates and clear cases etc. With the help of Radiolaria, a Nervous-developed physics-based phone case generator inspired by cellular and crystallin forms, users could design their own accessories and cases. "You can choose a cellular, polygonal or crystalline design and then apply various forces to your structure until you have a form you are happy with. The lattice-work of the 3D printed case will allow you to see your customized Moto X color underneath!" writes MAKEwithX team.
The 3D printers the group is using are the Projet 3500 Max HD, the Projet 460 plus as well as the Cube home 3D printer.
