At Maker Faire New York 2013 on Saturday last week, Sixense, maker of the Razer Hydra, demonstrated its MakeVR software on the 3D Printing Stage. MakeVR is an impressive user-friendly computer aided design program that allows everyone to easily create, manipulate, and sculpt 3D objects. Using the company's STEM System (a wireless motion controller) or other 3D controllers, non-designer civilians can just use natural hand gestures to build complex 3D models and manipulate objects. Instead of traditional menus and operations, its two-handed interface offers a natural, intuitive and fun way to create 3D models.
You can also import 3D file from Thingiverse, the imported objects can be combined with the objects created in MakeVR for 3D printing. But MakeVR also includes the precision tools for highly precise models including tessellation, healing, and hollowing. Then users can export objects in .STL format for use with any 3D printer.
MakeVR is also compatible with the upcoming Oculus Rift head-mounted display. So if you combine MakeVR with Oculus Rift, a virtual reality headset you could even navigate every angle of a 3D object and perfect each detail in a virtual world. You can go inside an object or passageway to get an ant's-eye view as you look around, surrounded on all sides by the object you are creating.
The software will cost sub $200 and Sixense is planning a Kickstarter campaign to fund the final stages of development of MakeVR within a few months.
