Elvira Yang, a developer and a manufacturer in Hong Kong, developed an open source (CC-BY-NC) universal full metal direct drive extruder and launched on indiegogo. The "Bulldog" is suitable for many of DIY 3d printers and compatible with most j-head mount nozzles.

There are two kinds of Bulldog extruder available: "Bulldog Lite" to suit 1.75mm filament only and "Bulldog XL" to suit both, 1.75 and 3mm filament.

The drawings of the Bulldog extruder project will be made available after this campaign ends. The Bulldog Lite plus Merlin Hotend + 3 nozzles costs $149 on indiegogo, and Bulldog XL ( for 1.75 and 3mm filament) and Bulldog XL + 2 Hotends are priced at $164 and $213 respectively.

TBH, this looks like a cube x extruder without the nozzle part, i may be wrong about how it works ( besides the fact that this one obviously doesn't have a filament measurment sensor ) but it does look promising! The QU-BD x-truder has been trash, and obnoxiously called the "best extruder on the market". After connecting and even amping up to 3A to the motor didnt seem to work, the aluminium gears were anodised which probably made the fit worse than planned for, and it couldn't even extrude anything as the filament couldnt even fit into the dual drive gears. biggest waste of my money ever.

I can't speak for the "Bulldog", but QU-BD isn't a solution. Their product has been causing a LOT of people problems. It started out as a bad clone of a sub-par extruder, the machining improved after the first batch, but you need to switch it to a spring lever & bearing system to get a decent drive that removes the fiddlyness of the drive, unless you wanted to overdrive the stepper & risk burning it out from ridiculously excessive heat to get the results they show. The motors with 5:1 gearboxes are far superior, and the gear they use is stupid. I switched it to an MK7 style hobbed pulley. Also, the QU-BD's mount plate isn't designed for RepRaps, I had to significantly alter it to make it work. I don't know what the mount plate is designed for, nothing I've fit it to worked without major changes. I don't think they put any consideration to it at all. So I've had to replace half the components of QU-BD extruder to get decent operation. Sometimes, saving money isn't worth the aggravation of a bad product. I'm still in search of a decent extruder, and I might try this, I don't know. I like the Maxstruder, it's been trouble free and fiddle-free, just expensive and I don't understand why the designer didn't put a good thumb tab on his lever.

The qu-bd you pointed are the metal parts only, there is no motor included, no shipping. The price for the Bulldog Lite is 114 US$, and the delivery by FedEx is included and the Nema17 plus PTFE and pushfits. The deal is okay, i odered mine

If you setup wrong steps_per_mm or extrude ration in slic3r then every extruder have a problems I use qu-bd since months without any issues. Additional super power for motors in reprap is not needed if everything is assembled and setup correctly.
