The low-cost full colour desktop 3D scanner launched on Kickstarter in February 2013 now has a name: it is called Cubik.

The Cubik 3D Scanner raised more than £97,200 on Kickstarter from 246 backers. In 2012 the company behind Cubik, Chester, UK based CADScan also secured a SMART grant from the UK's Technology Strategy Board to develop a prototype of a desktop 3D scanner.

The key to the 3D scanner is its unique and newly named patent-pending DepthPhase scanning technology, a fast, accurate, full colour depth sensing method. This works by projecting a sequence of sinusoidal patterns from an array of LEDs so that the phase of the patterns varies with depth. This allows the depth to be calculated for every pixel in the captured image. It does not use triangulation or lasers, minimising occlusions while remaining totally eye-safe.

Cubik is an automatic desktop 3D scanner with a small footprint similar to an inkjet printer. It uses two 5MP DepthPhase scanning heads to maximise object coverage. There is also a 'Macro mode' to allow small objects to be scanned closer to the scanning heads, increasing their resolution.

The system includes a fully integrated turntable, so you simply place your object inside the scanner and scan using the included software. An object can be placed at the edge of either turntable – the closest point - has a resolution of 0.05mm (50 microns) and 0.1mm (100 microns) at the centre. And the maximum capacity is now 200mm height x 220mm diameter.
