GE Researchers have been utilizing 3D printing for over 20 years. The company is going to build more than 85,000 fuel nozzles for its newest jet engine using 3D printing. By 2020, GE aviation is estimated to produce 100,000+ 3D-printed parts. 3D printing is changing the way GE works, and now GE is trying to give 3D printing its own holiday: 3D Printing Day.

"3D printing is revolutionizing manufacturing. So, we decided it's time to celebrate it." says GE.

GE's brought together a small group of celebrities and designers to design coolest holiday gifts in 2013, including:

  • Chris Poole, founder of the online message board 4Chan
  • Al Roker, America's favorite weatherman
  • Stacy London, who stars in TLC's What Not To Wear
  • Cooper-Hewitt, Smithsonian museum
  • Ben Kaufman, founder and CEO of Quirky
  • Craig Breslow, a pitcher for the 2013 World Series Champion Boston Red Sox
  • David O'Reilly, an Irish-born filmmaker

"We're going 3D on D3." as GE's putting it. GE has also teamed with 3D printing and modeling companies like 3D Systems, Autodesk, and Makerbot to help design and create these limited-edition 3-D printed holiday gifts.

Here is how it works: On Dec.3rd, you can choose a prototype, and tweet the tag #3Dprintmygift for a chance to win a customized version of it. GE will match you with a designer to customize it, print it and ship it all in time for the holidays. The designs of each item will be open and available for anyone to print from home after December 3rd.

GE has also teamed up with GrabCAD to present a fun contest '3DPrintMyGift Challenge' asking designers and engineers to help design a new 3D printed sleigh for Santa to aid him in his global travels.

GE's own intention is to get people thinking more about 3D printing and understand it by offering fun contests. After December 3rd, the designs of each item will be open and available for anyone.

You can check out GE 3D Printing Day Sweepstakes official rules here. It is only open to U.S. residents and totally 200 winners will each be awarded a 3D printed gift.
