A Canadian startup called Cirri wants to dimensionalize our world. Unlike any other scanning devices in the market today that require additional hardware, Cirri turns multiple digital images into three dimensional models.
The team has developed two affordable 3D scanning product: Cirri and Cirri Lite. Cirri is a software solution based on passive image stereo which works with images captured on any digital camera and turns them into 3D printable models. So Cirri doesn't suffer from poor resolution outside of a narrow parameter, limited range of subject or object size, proximity limitations as other 3D scanner hardware.
But we already have Eos Systems' PhotoModeler Scanner and Autodesk's free 123D Catch, what makes a Cirri scanner unique? According to the team, Cirri will deliver accurate high resolutions scanning with minimal number of photos (2 per visual face) at a remarkably low price.
"Cirri scanners can with the proper setup achieve accuracy of less than one third the thickness of a human hair with sufficient resolution to capture the shape of the relief on a coin." writes the team.
Cirri is not designed for any particular digital camera. Generally the better the camera the better the result. A two mega pixel camera will provide the minimum resolution. So you can just use the digital camera built into the iphone 5S or 5C.
Cirri currently functions best on a minimum Windows 7, 64-bit operating system with 8 Gb RAM and a video card. It is not Mac compatible but the company will make it if there is sufficient demand.
The startup wants to get Cirri into the hands of everyone and is launching their first Crowdfunding campaign for creating a new step-by-step graphical user interface to make Cirri easy to use. Cirri Lite that captures the model but without scale and coordinates is offered for CAD$199, and Cirri full version that provides scale, ground based coordinates and accurate measurements is available for CAD$599.
