University of Florida spin-out Paracosm has received $800,000 in seed funding from the Institute for Commercialisation of Public Research (ICPR), the Vegas Tech Nimbus Fund (VTNF), and local angels.
The ICPR supplied $300,000 of the total investment. Another $500,000 was from angel investors in Gainesville and South Florida, and VTNF.
3D imaging firm Paracosm, which was launched at the start of the year, develops software using computer-aided design (CAD) to convert depth camperas into 3D mapping systems.
Paracosm processes data from 3-D scanners, such as the PrimeSense camera and Xbox Kinect, to create 3-D models that can be viewed on next-generation technology devices ranging from mobile phones to augmented reality glasses.
You can simply grab a 3D scanner, download Paracosm's application and scan anything. After uploading your model to Paracosm's cloud, the system automatically converts your data to a 3D model. The model is then ready to download. You can then interact, measure and cutomize your model in any CAD packages or 3D modeling software.
"Paracosm is on a mission to create a 3-D model of every building on earth," said company co-founder Amir Rubin (32). "We plan to disrupt the professional 3-D scanning industry by enabling users to scan a space using readily-available cameras, upload their data to a cloud infrastructure that converts the scan to a CAD file, and download their model for use in any 3D CAD modeling tool of their choice, and funding from the Institute will help us to get there faster."
The startup has now 15 full-time staffers in Gainesville, with three who work remotely in Silicon Valley, Calif. It has contracts with NASA and ESRI, an international supplier of geodatabase software and other software. But according to Rubin, their biggest contract is with Google.
The company is currently expanding private beta to welcome any company that is interested in testing their software. Current use cases are scans to floor maps.
