This is a good news for people and companies who want to further explore materials for 3D printing.

Royal DSM, the global Life Sciences and Materials Sciences Company, has won an appeal regarding the opposition of patent EP1232198, titled, UV Curable Compositions at the European Patent Office Board of Appeal in Munich, Germany on 17 January 2014. This patent, currently assigned to 3D Systems, Inc., was revoked at the European level, thus allowing for increased development of materials in this field.

"We're pleased with the outcome as it encourages innovation in the area of photopolymers for stereolithography. " says Melissa Hayes, Somos Business Director for DSM.

Stereolithography is a common rapid manufacturing and rapid prototyping technology for producing parts with high accuracy and good surface finish. DSM has developed a full line of Stereolithography resins - liquid UV-curable photopolymers - used in this process. These materials replicate the performance parameters of production materials, saving both time and money in new product development.

DSM Somos line includes thermoplastic elastomers to polyethylene, polypropylene and ABS and can be used for functional models, fit/assembly, investment casting, injection molding/direct tooling and wind tunnel testing.

The patent EP1232198, "UV Curable Compositions," includes the following description:

The present invention relates to UV-curable compositions, the process for preparing the compositions and to the use of the curable compositions. The compositions contain: a) at least one oxetane compound; b) at least one polyfunctional cycloaliphatic epoxy compound; c) at least one multifunctional hydroxy compound; and d) at least one curing agent.

How about a further analysis of what this means? can anyone make any 3d printable resin now, or just this particular formula?
