Today, 3D scan and print studio DoubleMe3d opens in Bleiswijk, The Netherlands; the studio offers 3D-selfie-related services that may be paid for using Bitcoins.

At the new 3D printing studio DoubleMe3d, customers can have their full bodies scanned. The data from these scans provides the digital geometry for making 3D printed selfies.

3D prints made in the studio are made using PLA plastic which comes in many vibrant colors – including sandstone, copper, gold, or silver. If customers want their 3D selfies printed in a material other than PLA, DoubleMe3d outsources to Shapeways and other 3D printing service providers.

The 3D scans takes just a few minutes to complete, and the data from the scan may be improved or corrected in the 3D software. The models are printed on a scale of 1:11 and are usually between 10 and 17 cm tall. The actual 3D printing of the model takes about 8 hours to complete.

The Netherlands has a strong presence in the 3D printing world, and Sabina Groeneweg from DoubleMe3d hopes to help bring 3D printing technology closer to the Dutch people. She has made plaster sculptures of people in the past using traditional plaster casting, and sees 3D scanning and printing as offering new possibilities in portraiture.

At the end of the scanning and printing process, customers may walk away from DoubleMe3d 3D scan and print studio with their own 3D selfie.

In addition to regular payment methods, customers can pay for their selfies using the digital currency Bitcoins. At checkout, a QR-code is made and sent to customers. The QR-code includes payment details which can be used to pay DoubleMe3d for their 3D printing services using Bitcoins.

On their website, DoubleMe3d mentions the benefits of using Bitcoins: the digital currency is decentralized which eliminates extra transaction costs and payment can be made in a matter of seconds. In the Netherlands, it is possible to purchase Bitcoins through the sites bitonic.nl.

Bitcoin exchanges such as MtGox, which is the world's largest, are another option for people around the world who are interested in using this currency in the future – possibly for 3D printing services and applications.
