Today is the opening ceremony for the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. To celebrate the event – and the possibilities of 3D printing – we made the rounds at two popular CAD model websites to check out some freely available Sochi-Olympics-related 3D designs.

Thingiverse and Google 3D Warehouse are two popular sites for free 3D computer aided design (CAD) sharing. At these sites, CAD designs are available for direct download – kind of like an iTunes for 3D designs.

Festive, 3D printed Olympic rings are only a few clicks away with the help of a 3D printer and this 3D design from Thingiverse.

Or get in the 3D printed Olympic mood with a symphonic video of Olympic-additive manufacturing in action.

This cool Makerbot Skier Man 3D design could be used to print out a little plastic pal for watching alpine events – don't forget to keep him in tuck position.

Although the Soviet Union hosted the Olympic Games in 1980, this is the first time the country of Russia has hosted the event.

These sweet matryoshka dolls may be 3D printed to get in a Russian-Olymics-watching mood – plastics are available in a variety of rainbow colors.

Google 3D Warehouse turns out to be the go-to site for Sochi-specific 3D designs – including a 3D model of the spaceship-like Bolshy Ice Dome and the Fisht Olympic Stadium.

So consider celebrating the sports in Sochi this year with a couple of these cool CAD designs and a your nearest 3D printer.

Finally check out the video below, this world's first 'selfie building' that has opened at the Olympic Park in Sochi today. The Russian telecommunications company Megafon commissioned designer Asif Khan to create its Olympic pavilion. It features 10,000 actuators, or giant pins and will form 3D portraits of each visitor's face for 20 seconds. The 3D portraits of each visitor will be 8 meters in height on one side of the building.

Anyone visiting will be able to participate by having their face digitally scanned in the 3D photo booths placed inside the pavilion. Those who can not attend the events can visit MegaFon retail outlets around the country to get scanned, so everyone will have a chance to be present at the Olympics. After a scan has been made, the 3D image will be processed and fed to the mechanical field.
