3D printing retailer and software provider MatterHackers presented its first Android tablet-based Desktop 3D Printer control solution earlier this month at 3D Printer World in Burbank, CA.

The upcoming "MatterControl for Android" Desktop 3D Printer control tablet version will now make 3D printers stand-alone as well as networkable. In other words users will be able to share their printer across a network and print from anywhere using their mobile devices, laptops, and desktops or print from the printer directly without the need for a PC connection.

"The big picture, is any 3D printer can now become a Wi-Fi-enabled, stand-alone device", says Lars Brubaker, CEO of MatterHackers. This will enable other new network features. "The printer will be able to download designs & print directly from the Internet. You will also be able to receive notifications from your printer via email or SMS," Lars continued.

MatterControl for Android will also feature an intuitive touch screen interface directly on the printer.

MatterControl is an open source software designed to provide a clean, standard and consumer friendly user interface to 3D printers. It features a complete printing solution, such as plug and print, multiple slicing engines (Slic3r, CuraEngine, MatterSlice), automatic print leveling, advanced plating, plugin Systems for adding creation tools etc.

Last year MatterHackers partnered with Airwolf 3D to provide Airwolf 3D's printers with a free, fully-supported, version of MatterControl Pro. Up to now MatterHackers has included pre-configured plug-and-print profiles for Deezmaker, SeeMeCNC, Printrbot and Type a Machines 3D printers.

MatterControl is open source, you can find the code at github here.

I don't get it, is this about an android app or about the MatterControl windows app? The screenshot is definitely from the windows app and the github link is also for the PC version. From the MatterHackers site there is no android app yet! Is this scam?

@Reprap23 Agreed - this is not the first. Still pretty exciting especially if they are planning on having on-board slicing.

Nice, but not the worlds first and not even the second. There are already two 3D printing Apps in the Google Store: GCodePrintr by Mdcode and DroidProto by Phillip Kin.
