While getting a mini-replica of yourself isn't entirely new, a new 3D printing shop in China is offering a 1:1 life-size replica to people who want to have a life-like portrait of themselves or loved ones.
The Pinla3D opened its no. 11 location on March 2 in Nanjing's Wondercity Mall in east China's Jiangsu province. The store, the first of its kind in the city, offers visitors 3D scanning and printing services to visitors. Customers will have their bodies scanned into a computer, a process which takes about 3-5 minutes. After the scan, the image is processed by a computer and then sent to a 3D printer. Then the company prints the statuette on their 3D color printer in one of fifteen sizes. The customers can pick up their mini-me in two weeks.
Of course, these 3D printed miniatures are not cheap, even in China. The smallest-sized 3D printed figurine is only 12.5cm and costs RMB998 ($162); a 25cm figure costs RMB 3,580 (US$580), and a 1:1 life-size replica is priced at 175,000 RMB (US$28,555).
