Japanese startup Bonsai Lab released its ultra-compact Bonsai Mini 3D printer BS01 today.

The BS01 was launched on Japanese crowdfunding site "kibidango" in December 2013 and raised about JP¥10,500,000 ($101,000) funding in 3 weeks, more than five times of its JP¥2,000,000 funding goal.

The BONSAI Mini 3D printer is designed to be educational, entertaining and useful. The device is compact enough to fit on a small desk, and was designed for ease of use.

With a build volume of W150 x H100 x L130mm, you'll get a good build size for printing out small parts and toys. It is optimized for speed with a light print head, and produces a default 100-micron layer resolution in 3D prints.

The BS01 features MDF (medium density fibreboard) frame with a smooth sanded finish. MDF is made out of wood waste fibres and is eco-friendly. It was then painted using a water-based environmentally friendly material.

The BS01 offers four different size of custom-built nozzle, 0.2mm, 0.3mm, 0.4mm, 0.5mm. The simple design of hot end make it a snap to take apart and replace a part.

Specs:

  • Build envelope: W150 x H100 x L130mm
  • Printer size: W250 x H275 x L250mm
  • Weight: 5.04kg (PLA Model), 5.6kg (ABS/PLA Model)
  • Printing speed: Print 100mm/sec, Travel 200mm/sec

It looks like an almost 1-1 copy of the Ultimaker version 1 (https://www.ultimaker.com) printer, at a reduced scale.
