The only reason 3D Printing is cool is because it creates customized physical objects. In order for 3D Printers to achieve mass market adoption, CAD software must be useable by everyone.

Enter Tiles: an easy to use CAD software. To create a 3D model, all you have to do is drop 3D square cubes onto an empty canvas. After designing your model on Tiles, you can export the object you made into an .stl file and 3D print the design.

"We think, in the future, a 5 year old will be able to pick up her tablet with Tiles downloaded on it. She will design herself something cool on Tiles: maybe a Skyscraper, or maybe a Boat for Barbie and Ken. Click Print. Now she has a physical representation of her imagination in her hand! That is powerful!" says Dall Holly at Cadigo, the team behind Tiles.

Features on Tiles will include:

  • 360 degree camera
  • Zoom in, Zoom out
  • Import
  • Export to common 3D file extension formats such as .stl
  • Textures
  • Colors
  • In browser saving tool (Ctrl-S shortcut)
  • Undo hotkey (Ctrl-Z, Ctrl-Y)
  • Co-Op Multiplayer capability

Tiles is still a prototype. The team has launched a Kickstarter campaign to complete the project and make Tiles 100% ready for use.

With Tiles, anyone can create 3D designs at ease. Currently Tiles runs on a web browser with WebGL. If the team meets their stretch goal, they will also port it onto smartphone or tablet.

Can relate to the mission to get better CAD tools for 3D Printing, but Tiles doesn't get a lot of creative credibility by simply packaging a Three.js example: http://mrdoob.github.io/three.js/examples/webgl_interactive_voxelpainter.html

mmm tinkercad does this for free....except its a "square" in their program
