3D printers maker Stratasys said Friday it has entered into a definitive asset purchase agreement to acquire certain assets of Wisconsin-based Interfacial Solutions, a privately held company that provides thermoplastics R&D and production services to the plastics industry.

Interfacial Solutions have been a production partner to Stratasys for its FDM product lines over the past three years. It is the producer of some of Stratasys' thermoplastic material.

A purchase price was not disclosed. The acquisition is expected to strengthen Stratasys' materials R&D skills. Stratasys said Interfacial's expertise with plastics, a common material used by 3D printers, will help the company accelerate new materials development, and allow them to introduce new products to the market faster.

Interfacial Solutions is located in a 42,000 square foot facility near River Falls, Wisconsin, and has a team of scientists possessing more than 50 issued patents.

Stratasys expects the transaction to close in the second quarter of 2014.
