If you have a 3D printer at home, what would you print? In January Makerbot launched a digital store where people can buy designs made by in-house studio of designers. Wednesday Makerbot announced Sesame Street as its first global licensed brand will bring 3D printable Sesame Street licensed content to the MakerBot Digital Store. For $1.29, you can download the design of Mr. Snuffleupagus, the woolly mammoth that's best friends with Big Bird, and print it at your home 3D printer. Additional characters will follow in the coming months, said Makerbot.
Many people grew up with Sesame Street, but now you could just create one of your favorite characters right at home. In addition, Sesame Street 3D printed models are expected to be available soon for purchase in MakerBot Retail Stores.
"We are really proud to launch our first branded and licensed 3D printed products for the MakerBot Digital Store and MakerBot Retail Stores with Sesame Street,"said MakerBot's CEO Bre Pettis.
"Sesame Street has always been near and dear to my heart. I used to work for Jim Henson's Creature Shop, and I grew up watching Sesame Street. Having the ability to 3D print a beloved character – or soon, an entire set of cherished characters — will be really fun and educational. 3D printing is like having an engineering education in a box, but with Sesame Street, it has a playful and familiar twist."
Sesame Workshop, the legendary company behind Sesame Street, wants to be one of the first to try something cool. Now we just need more other company to do it too.
Mr. Snuffleupagus, or Snuffy, will make his first 3D printed appearance at the Bay Area Maker Faire in San Mateo, Calif., May 17 and 18, at the MakerBot booth. Event attendees are encouraged to be on the lookout for the 3D printed Snuffy figurines hidden throughout the event center.
Contestants who post their photos to Twitter or Instagram with the tag #SnuffySelfie will be entered to win a MakerBot Replicator® 2 Desktop 3D Printer, $100 worth of MakerBot Digital Store content, three spools of MakerBot PLA Filament and select Sesame Street merchandise.
