In May we reported that Canada-based Structur3d Printing is creating an add-on extruder to enable almost any desktop 3D printer to print a whole new range of paste-like materials.
Structur3D's Discov3ry extruder is an affordable, plug and play device which can easily be integrated with any stepper motor based, fused deposition modeling (FDM) desktop 3D printer. With Discov3ry extruder, home based 3D printing is not limited to printing plastics anymore, and it will enable makers to print a whole new range of materials, including silicone, polyurethane, wood filler, clay, ceramics, icing sugar, nutella, conductive paint etc.
The Discov3ry system works by forcing material out of reusable, affordable syringes. The extruder is designed to be plug-and-play, so you can simply switch out the printing tip to connect the material feed tube and extruder tip, and then connect the Discov3ry's wiring into your existing printers electronics. A wide variety of tip designs and diameters is also available to suit your paste printing needs.
The Discov3ry extruder is compatible with Makerbot, Ultimaker, Printrbot, Felix, Lulzbot, Bukito, Solidoodle 3D printer and most other DIY RepRap 3D printers. Setting up the Discov3ry on your printer is also very simple. All you have to do is set up the print parameters to account for the specific properties of each material.
Structur3D is looking to the community to raise $30,000 to fund a production run of at least 100 units of the Discov3ry. For $249 you can receive the extruder from the first production batch. And it will come with a 'cartridge starter kit', which will contain:
- 3 x 60cc reloadable food-grade syringes;
- 3 x 30cm reusable foodsafe plastic tubing;
- 3 x male luer lock / tubing connectors;
- 3 x female luer lock / tubing connectors;
- and an assortment of Luer lock tips.
With these reloadable syringe cartridges, the limitations are your imagination. Watch below the Discov3ry's Kickstarter demo video:
