3D printing materials provider MadeSolid has released a new resin specifically engineered for investment casting resin. Frustrated with failed prints and the limitation of slim color selection, MadeSolid, a YC-backed company out of Emeryville, CA, wants to advance the capabilities of 3D printers through better formulated materials.
MadeSolid has been developing a variety of new products such as MS Resin and PET+ Filament for 3D printers. The new resin, named FireCast is compatible with a number of SLA printers including B9 Creator, Deep Imager 5, and Form 1.
The resin can be used for direct investment casting of products such as jewelry. So when you print a ring in FireCast, you can use this plastic prototype to create a mold. The mold is pre-heated in a oven to evaporate the 3D print inside. The resin is formulated to leave no ash or residue after burnout, so then you can fill the mold with molten metal to cast your design in metal.
"The resin is less viscous than most other resins and is easier to clean out from vats and off prints." notes the MadeSolid team. "It's ideal for anyone who wants to change their printer to allow for casting parts."
The new FireCast resin is available at $199 per bottle (500g).

I believe PLA works almost as well at the tiniest fraction of the cost. Anyone have experience and want to weigh in?
