Every year at Christmas, the White House opens its doors to tens of thousands of visitors from around the country to tour the holiday decorations. This year, for the first time ever, the White House is inviting makers and innovators around the country to participate in the White House 3D-Printed Ornament Challenge.
The Challenge, in partnership with the Smithsonian, "invites makers, artists, designers, engineers, and anyone interested in 3D modeling and 3D printing to design a winter holiday-inspired ornament."
The winning designs, chosen by White House staff, will be printed at the Autodesk Pier 9 workshop and shipped to the White House to be displayed as part of the East Wing holiday décor during the holiday season. They will also be featured on the Smithsonian's state-of-the-art 3D data platform, 3d.si.edu; and will end up in a collection of White House ornaments in the political history division of the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History.
Starting today Oct.30 and running until November 10, 2014, everyone can head over to Instructables to submit their design and learn more details about the Challenge.

Since the White House Maker Faire in June, the White House has continued to support opportunities for students to learn about STEM through making, expand the resources available for maker entrepreneurs, and foster the development of advanced manufacturing in the U.S.
Contest organizers say ornaments should "reflect the magic and wonder of the holidays, so think ornaments that represent winter sports, toys, activities, symbols, and anything that inspires you during the festive winter season."
To submit a design, U.S. makers should create a free Instructable for the ornament, include the .stl file, and use the 3D object viewer to show a 360-degree mock-up of their design. The model should be no larger than 3"x3" and reflect the theme of the magic and wonder of the holidays and the winter season.
The contest ends November 10, 2014 at 11:59 PM PT.
