With CES 2015 barely off the ground (Monday 01/05 is Press Day), there are already a slew of announcements coming from both large tech giants and small startups alike. Among them is the news that production delay-plagued BotObjects has been acquired by South Carolina, U.S.-based 3D Systems.
While BotObjects founders Martin Warner and Mike Duma have come under scrutiny for lack of communication and failure to ship their full-color ‘ProDesk3D’ 3D printer to a long list of customers who opted for an early pre-order, the technology that they developed is still impressive and likely on the radar for larger companies such as 3D Systems.
So far, terms of the acquisition have remained undisclosed, however it was announced by 3D Systems that the ProDesk3D (or at least its technology) will be added to 3D Systems’ new line of CubePro C 3D printers. The lineup, which is being touted by 3D Systems as having greater accuracy and speed than its competitors’ models, offers a "true full-color experience at the affordable price of $4,990".
Although Martin Warner and Mike Duma were on hand at last year’s 3D printing event to show that the ProDesk3D was, in fact, a working 3D printer, there have since been angry customers (those lucky enough to have even received a model) that have supposedly shipped their model back to BotObjects claiming that they don’t work as advertised.
To be fair, it’s not the first time that a 3D printer manufacturer has run into production problems. However, the fact that they had sold pre-orders and were delayed on production without making the refund experience easy to early believers leaves their business ethics in an in-between ethical dilemma.
With that being said, perhaps joining 3D Systems might just be the push that Warner and Duma have been needing all along. In a statement regarding the acquisition, Warner, who is also the CEO of BotObjects, said:
“Joining the winning team at 3DS couldn’t have come at a better time as orders for our revolutionary full-color desktop printer continue to outstrip our resources. Together we can bring this powerful technology to more users faster.”
BotObjects also plans on fulfilling backorders that have taken so long to produce thanks to an expanded manufacturing capacity thanks to the support from 3D Systems.
Warner is expected to become Vice President, General Manager of BotObjects for 3D Systems while Duma, who was the design engineer for the ProDesk3D, is expected to stay on the BotObjects team as well.
